What is Counselling?
We at Redefine interpret counselling as the process of building a relationship with our client that is based on trust, confidentiality and mutual respect; to explore thoughts by consultation, to learn to understand them clearly through the joint interchange of opinions and ideas and to deliberate together to facilitate growth.
Why Counselling with Redefine?
We all crave greater meaning, transcendental experiences, inspirational moments filled with purpose, and serenity in life, but in the chaotic reality of life, we don’t have the time to stop and think about the facets of our lives that hold us back from realizing our true potential. All of us experience personal challenges and problems in our lives. In many instances, we are capable of handling these with ease based on our previous experiences and knowledge.
In the next stage, we talk to people we trust, our friends, and family, or seek counsel from mentors to manage these difficulties with the help of ‘our team’. However, there are times when these difficulties are far more complex and overwhelming to cope with on our own. At such times, seeking support from a trained professional such as a counsellor can be beneficial.
The emotional burdens we carry can be the result of abandonment, lack of acceptance, living in denial, unresolved grief, loss or traumatic events from the past, conflicts, difficult relationships, uncontrollable circumstances, or any other unmanageable situation that has become intensely stressful over time. Most of us are guilty of not addressing issues at the appropriate time and wait till we reach our breaking point. While some of these issues may have been minimised, or avoided altogether by seeking help at the right time, sometimes it takes us the shock of hitting rock bottom to realize what is more important through the haze of our pride, sense of self, control over our life, or cultural perceptions on seeking help for issues of the mind; to recognize things that may have been never discussed or acknowledged while it has been gradually eating away at our life.
When we finally unpack our burdens, it is vital we have the space and opportunity to work through our thoughts, and examine our complex perspectives formed as a result of our unique set of circumstances. We strive to assist our clients to gain insight and understanding of their own mind, and then we guide them by reflecting together in order to help them make a positive change in their lives. We also help our clients identify their goals and potential solutions to challenges/problems that cause emotional turmoil. We seek to enhance mindfulness and communication skills, strengthen self-confidence, and to provide the tools that promote wellness for optimal mental health.
When making the decision to seek a counsellor, it is only natural to feel anxious. Making the decision to reach out for support to address the difficulties being faced, is an important first step and we commend you for this effort.
